New Lexington Schools Spotlight Career and Techincal Education Agenda to Sherrod Brown
New Lexington Schools hosted visitors from all over the country to spotlight the district’s commitment to Career and Technical Education (CTE). Guests included Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT); Melissa Cropper, president of the Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT); former U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, and educators from New York, Connecticut, Texas, Illinois, Missouri, and Washington, D.C.
The day’s activities started at 9 a.m. with a visit to the New Lexington Schools farm located at 5454 state Route 37 across from the Perry County Fairgrounds. Visitors were given an overview of the district’s ag and welding programs as well as what will be taking place in the new Ag/ Advanced Manufacturing Building located adjacent to the FFA barn.
New Lexington High Schools students presented brief but informative descriptions of agricultural projects housed in the barn while high school ag teacher Heather Foster provided more details about hands on education experiences taking place for New Lexington students at every grade level. The principal at New Lexington High School is Tony Thorngate.
“Passion plus purpose equals possibilities is how I describe what is happening here,” said Weingarten. She added that in addition to her visits to New Lexington, the AFT has provided financial support for the New Lexington Workforce Development Center.
