Steelworkers Approve Contract, Ending 67-Day Strike at Shelby ArcelorMittal Plant

Steelworkers with Local Union 3057 have approved a new contract with ArcelorMittal at its Shelby facility, ending a 67-day strike.

“The proposed agreement presented to the local union was passed overwhelmingly today, 220 to 153,” said Norm Shoemaker, president of United Steelworkers Local 3057. “Like the majority of our union brothers and sisters, I am ready to get back to work and continue being the greatest tube makers in the world.”

Shoemaker said in a statement to members that union officials will coordinate with the company to determine a timeline for restarting operations.

The strike began Jan. 13 at 11:59 p.m., halting operations at the historic plant, long known as the birthplace of U.S. tubular products.

"When I joined the members for the march to mark the two-month anniversary of the strike, I knew these workers were going to win a fair contract because their solidarity was unbreakable," said Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga. "There is no stronger force than union solidarity an every one of these Steelworkers proved it."
