Tim Ryan, Marcy Kaptur Rally In Toledo In Support of Rail Workers With AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department

Congressman Tim Ryan, Ohio AFL-CIO endorsed candidate for US Senate, joined Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and hundreds of union members and working people to rally for a fair contract for rail workers. The event was held at the UAW hall, and hosted by several railroad unions to call attention to the ongoing contract negotiations.

The railroad industry’s posture, Ryan said, “is the perfect example of greed and disrespect … ignoring what workers are going through every day.”

Respect, Mr. Ryan said, “is on the ballot in the fall — the idea of whether or not we’re going to respect everybody in this country regardless of what your title is. We’re going to make sure that everybody gets a fair shot, everybody has opportunity, every community is plugged in, because we respect each other.”

Bill DeCarlo, the national legislative director for the Transportation Communications Union, praised Mr. Ryan as “someone who has always stood by labor’s side,” while Gregory Regan, president of the AFL-CIO’s Transportation Trades Division, told the crowd that labor is well positioned to influence the nation’s political future.

“Rail labor is very excited about his campaign and about the potential for having a real voice and flipping the Senate,” Matt Weaver, a track and bridge maintenance worker from Genoa who is the Ohio state legislative director for the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, said afterward.
