TWU Union Members, Akron METRO RTA Agree To 6-Year Contract

The Akron METRO Regional Transit Authority Board voted Tuesday to approve a new contract with union workers, bringing an end to the threat of a work stoppage.

“METRO’s first priority was to not expose our transit-loyal riders to the risk of missing life-essential trips," CEO Dawn Distler said in a statement. "Throughout this process, our goal was to reach an agreement that was fair and reasonable for our team members, our riders, and the community we serve. Our METRO team and our riders will always be our focus, and ensuring continued service was the key objective throughout these negotiations."

Last week, members of Transport Workers Union Local 1 voted to accept the six-year contract proposal.

"We fought back and drove the economic value of the contract much higher than the bosses ever thought possible," TWU International President John Samuelsen said in a statement. "We put together a strategic campaign with Local 1 leadership, executed the plan, and secured a contract that gives workers the respect and economic advancement they deserve."
